The detail
Website care, often sold as an AMC or annual maintenance contract, is the ongoing work that keeps a live site safe, quick and up to date. It is for businesses with a website and nobody in-house to look after it. We do the updates, watch the site, make your changes and log every request where you can see it.
Why does a live website need looking after?
A website is never finished. Software gets updates, and old versions develop security holes. Plugins stop working with new releases. Certificates expire. Hosting fills up. A form stops delivering, and nobody notices until a customer asks why no one called back.
Care is the routine that catches these things early. Someone applies the updates, watches uptime, takes backups and checks they restore, and fixes small problems before they become large ones. It also covers the content and design changes every business needs over time.
What care covers, at every level
Care runs as our Care Retainer, in three levels: The Keeper, The Partner and The Confidant. They differ in how much attention your site gets, from keeping it safe and online to helping shape where it goes next. You can move between levels as your needs change.
Every level includes the basics: updates and security fixes, uptime monitoring, backups, small changes, and a team that picks up when something breaks.
How the Client Ops Portal keeps it clear
Care requests that run through email get lost. We built the Client Ops Portal, one of our own products, to stop that. Each request is recorded when you make it. Each draft has a single review link. Each approval is logged.
If you want to know what changed on your site last spring and who approved it, the portal has the answer. When several people on your team make requests, everyone sees the same record.
How we take on your site
We start with a review: the site, its hosting, its domain and its accounts. You get a plain list of what is out of date, what is at risk and what is working well. Urgent problems are fixed first. Then we bring the site up to date, set up monitoring and backups, and connect you to the portal. From there, care runs every month at the level you chose.
What does good website care look like?
You rarely hear from us, because nothing has gone wrong. A security fix is applied before it becomes a problem. A slow page is noticed before your customers notice it. When you need a banner changed for a festival, you raise it in the portal and it goes live once you approve the draft. At agreed intervals you get a short review: what we did, what we noticed and what we suggest next.
How the TechSum Standard applies to website care
- Secure by default: security fixes are applied promptly, logins are tidied up, and old accounts nobody uses are closed.
- Built to scale: when the site needs to grow, changes are made properly in the theme or code, so it stays easy to look after.
- Tested before it ships: updates and changes are checked on real phones and browsers before your visitors meet them, and backups are restored on purpose, so you know they work.
- Looked after after launch: this is the whole service. Updates, monitoring and fixes carry on, and the team that answers knows your site.
- Small changes handled, not invoiced: a text edit, a changed phone number or a broken link gets fixed. It does not become a quote.
- Honest advice: if your site is a one-page brochure that never changes, you may not need a plan at all, and we will say so.
When care is not what you need
If nobody can find who owns the hosting or domain accounts, the first job is recovering access, and we will start there. If you need an engineer working on your own product every day, a Dedicated Team fits better than a care plan. If the site is so out of date that every fix breaks something else, a website migration may cost less than keeping it alive.
What care connects to
Care is where the one-team idea shows most. The same people who look after your site can speed it up through Core Web Vitals work, keep its email landing in inboxes with email deliverability, and handle the servers and backups behind it under Digital Infrastructure. Sites we built and sites we did not, on Next.js, WordPress or Shopify.

FAQ
Questions we get asked
What does AMC mean?
AMC stands for annual maintenance contract: an agreement that a team keeps your website updated, secure and working, and fixes problems as they come up. We offer the same cover as a monthly Care Retainer.
What is the difference between The Keeper, The Partner and The Confidant?
They are the three levels of our Care Retainer. The Keeper keeps a live site safe, updated and online. The Partner adds regular improvements planned with you, and The Confidant adds an adviser to ask before technology decisions. What each includes is written down before you start.
Can you look after a site you did not build?
Yes, most care starts that way. We review the site, its hosting and its accounts first, then tell you plainly what we found. If it is in poor shape, we say what to fix first and why.
How do I ask for a change?
Through the Client Ops Portal. Each request is recorded, each draft gets one review link, and each approval is logged against it. You never have to dig through email to find out who agreed to what.
Will I get invoiced for every small fix?
No. Small changes such as a text edit, a new phone number or a broken link are handled as part of care. Larger pieces of work are scoped and agreed with you before they start, so there are no surprise invoices.
