Technical SEO Audit

The detail
A technical SEO audit is for businesses whose website gets less search traffic than it should, or who are about to redesign or move a site. It checks whether search engines can find, read and trust your pages. We review crawling, indexing, speed, structure and structured data, then give you fixes in order of importance, each with the reason it matters.
What is a technical SEO audit, in plain words?
Search engines send programs, called crawlers, to visit your pages and work out what they are about. If a crawler is blocked, confused or slowed down, good content can stay invisible. A technical audit looks for those blockers.
A content review asks whether a page is useful. A technical audit asks whether the search engine can reach it, understand it and show it.
When does a site need one?
The most common reason is a site that should perform better than it does. Others are a redesign or platform move on the way, an online store with thousands of pages, or a drop in traffic nobody can explain. Doing the audit before a move is far cheaper than repairing rankings after one.
What the audit covers
- Crawling: which pages a crawler can reach, which are blocked and where it gets stuck.
- Indexing: which pages are in Google's index, which are not, and why.
- Structure: how pages link together, and whether important pages are buried.
- Titles, headings and meta descriptions (the short text under a result in Google): missing, duplicated or unclear.
- Redirects and errors: broken links, long redirect chains and missing pages.
- Speed and Core Web Vitals, especially on mobile. See Core Web Vitals work.
- Structured data and sitemaps: whether pages carry labels machines can read, and whether a sitemap is in place.
- Mobile display: whether content that appears only after scripts run is visible to search engines.
- Duplicate content and canonical tags (the setting that tells search engines which version of a page is the main one).
How we run the audit
We ask about your goals, your important pages, recent changes and the tools you use, and request read-only access to Search Console and Analytics. Then we crawl the site, gather the data and test the findings by hand, so the report holds only issues that matter.
You receive a written report. Findings are listed in order of importance, each explained in plain words with how to fix it. A short summary at the top is written for readers who are not technical.
What should you have after an audit?
Every important page can be crawled and is in the index. The site loads quickly on mobile. Each page has a distinct title and a clear heading. Structured data matches the visible content. Redirects are tidy, so a future move does not lose the ranking the old pages earned. And you know what to do next, in order.
How the TechSum Standard applies to an audit
- Secure by default: we ask for read-only access only, and remove it when the audit ends.
- Built to scale: fixes are written as rules for page templates, not page-by-page patches, so new pages are right from the start.
- Tested before it ships: every finding is checked by hand before it goes in the report, and fixes we make are checked again on the live site.
- Looked after after launch: follow-up fixes and monthly reviews can carry on through a Care Retainer, and agencies can use a White-Label Partnership.
- Small changes handled, not invoiced: a follow-up question about the report, or a quick check after your developers make a fix, gets answered, not billed.
- Honest advice: if the site is already in good shape, the report says so. We do not invent problems to fill a list.
When an audit is not what you need
If you want guaranteed first-page positions, we are not the team. If the site has no content or customers yet, an audit is early. If the real problem is that few people want what you sell, an audit will not fix that, and we will say so.
Fixes connect to the rest of our work: we can make them under Web Design & Development, carry the gains into AI answers with AEO and GEO, and protect them through a website migration. FAQ
Questions we get asked
What is a technical SEO audit?
It is a check of the behind-the-scenes things that decide whether search engines can find, read and trust your pages: crawl paths, indexing, speed, site structure, redirects and structured data. It leaves content quality aside and asks whether Google can reach and understand what you have.
How long does an audit take?
It depends on the size and complexity of the site. A small business site is quicker than a large store. We agree the scope and the delivery date with you at the start.
Will you fix the problems you find?
We can, or we can hand the list to your own developers. Either way, the report is written so a developer can act on it without needing a call to explain it.
Will the audit improve my rankings?
Fixing real technical blockers often helps, but no audit can guarantee a ranking. Rankings also depend on content, competition and how trusted your site is. We report on what changes after the fixes, so you can see the effect.
Do you audit sites you did not build?
Yes. Most audits are for sites built by someone else, on any platform.
