Product Development

A product people pay for, from first idea to the years after launch.

Product Development at TechSum is for founders and businesses turning an idea into software customers use and pay for. One team takes it from research and design to build, launch and every release after, so the people who understood the problem are the ones who fix the bug.

  • 8 kinds of work
  • 5 ways to work
  • New discipline

Who it is for

Is this you?

  • You have an idea and need real customers using a first version

  • A key process runs on a spreadsheet and a WhatsApp group

  • The last team went quiet halfway, and nobody knows what actually works

  • Your product has outgrown the way it was first built

What we do

Eight ways we make it happen

Each one starts with what changes for you, then how we do it. The ones with their own page go deeper. Whichever you need, the same standard applies, and the same team does the work.

What you get

What you get, whatever the size

Whatever the size of the job, you receive these, phase by phase. Nothing is held back at the end.

  • A working demo at every sprint
  • Every source file, login and a recorded walkthrough
  • A portal where every request and approval is on record
Every source file and login is yours at launch.

How we run it

Five phases, the same on every project. You choose the pace. We agree the schedule with you at the start.

In detail

Who Product Development suits, what we build, how the TechSum Standard applies and when we are not the right team. Open the ones you care about.

Product Development at TechSum is for founders and businesses that want to turn an idea into software customers use and pay for. One team handles research, design, build and the years after launch, so the people who understood the problem are the people who fix the bug.

What is product development?

It is deciding what to build, building the first useful version, and then improving it with real feedback. That covers research, screens, code, hosting, billing and the unglamorous parts that matter, like backups and monitoring.

Most products go wrong before the code is written. They solve a problem nobody will pay for, or they try to do everything at launch. So we start with the problem, not the screens.

Who is product development for?

Mostly three kinds of businesses:

  • Founders with an idea who need a first version to test with customers.
  • Established businesses that run a key process on spreadsheets and want proper software, such as a booking system, a partner portal or an approvals tool.
  • Teams with a product that has stalled, or an older product that no longer fits how the business works.

If you are still deciding whether the idea is worth building, start with the Product Discovery Sprint. It is a small piece of work with a fixed scope, and it ends with a written report you keep.

What does TechSum do in product development?

The work falls into eight areas, and you can start with any one of them.

  • Discovery and validation: a short sprint that tests the idea and ends with a scope, a prototype and a plan. Read more about the Product Discovery Sprint.
  • MVP development: the smallest version of the product that real customers can use. See MVP development.
  • SaaS platforms. SaaS means software customers subscribe to. We build it so many customers share one product, each with their own private data, with billing included. See SaaS development.
  • Product design: research into how people use the product, prototypes and a shared set of screens and buttons, linked with Brand & Identity when the product needs its own look.
  • Internal tools and business platforms for your staff, partners and customers.
  • Modernisation and re-platforming: rebuilding an older product on current technology, in stages.
  • Product rescue: taking over stalled or abandoned builds. See product rescue.
  • Post-launch iteration: analytics, a roadmap and a steady release rhythm, often alongside Data & Analytics.

A product needs more than code: a look people trust, numbers that show how it is used, and hosting that keeps up as users grow. The same team covers all of it, so the roadmap has one owner and nobody re-explains anything.

How does a TechSum product build run?

We follow The Path: Listen, Shape, Build, Launch and Evolve.

In Listen, which starts on day one, we study the business, the users and what success looks like. In Shape, before any build, that becomes a technical plan, rough screen layouts (wireframes) and a scope you can hold us to. Build runs in sprints you can see, with a working demo at the end of each one. Launch happens when you are ready, after testing across devices, with every source file and a recorded walkthrough handed over. Evolve carries on from there.

You set the pace, and we agree the schedule with you at the start. A small internal tool and a SaaS platform with many customers are not the same job, and we will say so before you commit.

The TechSum Standard applies to every product we build:

  • Secure by default: accounts, roles and each customer's private data separated from the first version, so security never needs a rebuild later.
  • Built to scale: the first version is small on purpose, but its data, billing and hosting are chosen so growth means a bigger plan, not a rewrite.
  • Tested before it ships: every release tested before it reaches users, with a working demo at the end of each sprint.
  • Looked after after launch: monitoring, fixes and the next release carry on, with every request logged.
  • Small changes handled, not invoiced: a label that confuses users or a field in the wrong order gets fixed. It does not wait for a new contract.
  • Honest advice, even when it means less work for us: if a tool you can buy solves the problem, or the idea needs testing first, you hear it before you commit.
What does a good result look like?

A product that does one job well from the first day. Real users can sign up, pay and get value. You can see how it is used, because tracking is set up before launch. The code and the hosting belong to you, with notes so the next developer is not guessing.

After launch, a good result is a steady pace: small improvements released regularly, and a short list of what comes next and why.

When are we not the right team?

If you want a product built with no discovery at all, we are not the right fit. If the idea depends on technology that does not exist yet, we will say so. And if a simpler tool you can buy would solve the problem, you will hear that before any build begins.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

How is product development different from building a website?

A website mostly presents information. A product has accounts, data, rules and usually payments, and it keeps changing as customers use it. That changes how we plan it, test it and look after it.

Do I need a finished idea before I talk to you?

No. Many founders arrive with a problem and a rough sketch. A Product Discovery Sprint turns that into a tested scope, a prototype and a build plan before any large build starts.

Who owns the code and the product?

You do. At launch you receive every source file, every login and a recorded walkthrough. Nothing depends on us to keep running.

Can you take over a product another team started?

Yes. We start by reviewing what exists, then tell you plainly whether to fix it, rebuild part of it or start again. Our product rescue page shows how that goes.

What happens after the product launches?

We stay. Launch is a checkpoint, not the finish. Most products carry on with a Care Retainer or a dedicated team, depending on how fast the roadmap moves.

Or start smaller

Product Discovery Sprint

Test a product idea before you pay for the build. A tested scope, a clickable prototype and a build plan, in one written report.

  • A written problem statement and a definition of who the product is for
  • Research notes from talking to the people who would use it
  • A scoped first version: what is in, and what is left out
  • A clickable prototype you can put in front of users
  • Ends in a short written report you keep

Let's Talk

Tell us what should change.

Describe the problem in plain words. You don't need the right technical terms. A person on the team replies with what would actually help, and says so if another team would suit you better.
