Shopify or WooCommerce for an Indian online store?

Both work well in India. The right one depends on your catalogue, your team and who looks after the store once it is live. A fair comparison on payments, GST, shipping and ownership.

Cover for Shopify or WooCommerce for an Indian online store?

Choose Shopify if you want a store running quickly with little technical upkeep, and WooCommerce if you want full control, have developers or a trusted partner, and need unusual features. Both work well in India. The better choice depends on your catalogue, your team and how you want to handle maintenance.

How do the two platforms differ at heart?

Shopify is a hosted service. You rent the store software, and Shopify runs the servers, security updates and checkout. You customise through themes and apps.

WooCommerce is a plugin that turns a WordPress website into a store. The software is open source, and you host it somewhere, update it, secure it and back it up, or pay someone to.

That one difference explains most of the rest. Shopify is easier to start and harder to bend. WooCommerce is easier to bend and takes more looking after.

Which is better for payments in India?

Both support the main Indian gateways. Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and others publish integrations for each platform, and UPI, cards, netbanking, wallets and cash on delivery are all possible. Shopify's own checkout has certain rules on which gateways can be used without extra transaction charges, so check the current terms for your plan. With WooCommerce, you pick the gateway plugin and talk directly to the provider.

Cash on delivery is a large part of Indian D2C. Whichever platform you choose, plan how to reduce failed deliveries: confirmation by WhatsApp, address checks and partial prepayment options. Our guide on WhatsApp Business API shows how order confirmations work.

If you sell abroad as well, see Razorpay versus Stripe for an Indian business selling abroad.

What about GST, invoices and shipping?

You need GST-compliant invoices with the right GSTIN, HSN codes, tax split and place of supply. Both platforms can do this through apps or plugins, and some need customisation for specific cases such as inter-state sales or composition scheme sellers. Confirm your setup with your chartered accountant.

For shipping, aggregators such as Shiprocket publish integrations for both. Check pincode serviceability, rate calculation at checkout, tracking updates and returns handling. Test these with real orders before launch.

How do speed and design compare?

A good Shopify theme loads reasonably well out of the box. Too many apps slow it, since each adds scripts.

WooCommerce speed depends on hosting, theme and plugins. A lean build on good hosting is fast. A theme with many plugins on cheap shared hosting is not.

For both, aim for Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less (source: Google web.dev). We cover the steps in how to pass Core Web Vitals. Most online shoppers browse on phones, so test on a mid-range Android phone over a mobile connection, not only on a laptop.

Who owns what?

With WooCommerce, you own the code, the database and the hosting account. You can move hosts freely.

With Shopify, you own your content, products and customer data, and you can export it. You do not own the platform. If Shopify changes its pricing or rules, you adapt or migrate.

Neither is wrong. Know which situation you are in.

What will you maintain after launch?

On Shopify: app subscriptions, theme updates, and checking that apps still work together.

On WooCommerce: WordPress, WooCommerce and plugin updates, security patches, backups, uptime monitoring, and fixes when an update breaks something. Online stores handle payments and customer data, so skipping this is risky. See what a website care plan covers.

Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you are responsible for the personal data your store collects, whichever platform holds it. You need a clear notice and consent for marketing messages.

When does each one fit?

Shopify tends to fit when:

  • You sell a clear catalogue of physical products.
  • You want to launch soon and have no technical person on the team.
  • You prefer paying a monthly fee over managing servers.
  • Your needs are standard: variants, discounts, reviews, a few shipping rules.

WooCommerce tends to fit when:

  • You already have a WordPress site and content you want to keep.
  • You need unusual products, such as made-to-order items, bookings or complex pricing.
  • You want control over URLs, checkout steps and data.
  • You have developers or a partner who will maintain it.

When should you look beyond both?

If you need a heavily customised storefront, several markets with different currencies, or a store that integrates tightly with an ERP, a headless build can make sense. A commerce engine handles products and orders while a custom front end handles the experience. It costs more to build and maintain, so pick it only when the standard options clearly fall short.

What should you do before choosing?

Write down your product count, order volume, payment methods, shipping model, integrations (accounting, inventory, WhatsApp) and who will manage the store day to day. Then compare the two platforms against that list instead of general reviews. If you have a quote for a store build and want a neutral read on it, a tech second opinion can help.

We build on both under e-commerce development and Web Design & Development. This is the kind of work we do, and we will recommend the platform that fits your business, not the one we prefer. To talk about your store, Let's Talk.

Questions

Which is cheaper, Shopify or WooCommerce?

It depends on what you add. Shopify charges a plan fee plus app subscriptions and transaction costs. WooCommerce software is free, but you pay for hosting, plugins, security and developer time. Compare the full yearly cost for your own catalogue and order volume.

Do both support Razorpay, UPI and cash on delivery?

Both can. Indian gateways such as Razorpay offer plugins or apps for each platform, and cash on delivery is available on both. Check each gateway's current support and fees before you decide.

Which one is better for SEO?

Both can rank well. WooCommerce gives more control over URLs and technical details. Shopify handles the basics well but limits some URL structures. Content, speed and product data quality matter more than the platform.

Can I move from WooCommerce to Shopify later?

Yes. Products, customers and orders can be moved, and redirects protect your search traffic. It takes planning, so choose the one you can live with for several years.

What about a headless store?

A headless setup uses Shopify or another commerce engine for products and checkout, and a custom front end for the storefront. It suits brands that need a very custom experience and have developers to maintain it. It is overkill for most new stores.
