AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what is the difference?
Three acronyms, one worry: will people find you on Google and in AI answers? What each one means, where they overlap, and why one plan usually covers all three.
SEO is the work of getting your pages to rank in search results. AEO, Answer Engine Optimisation, is the work of being the direct answer a search feature or assistant gives. GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation, is the work of being mentioned or cited when an AI system writes an answer. They share a base, and for most businesses one plan covers all three.
What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimisation aims to make your pages appear in organic results when people search. It covers three areas:
- Technical health: Search engines can crawl and index the site, pages load fast and work on mobile.
- Content: pages match what people search for and answer it well.
- Authority: other trusted sites link to you or mention you, and your business looks real.
The result is a ranked list of links. People choose one and click. The measures are rankings, impressions, clicks and conversions, and Google Search Console reports most of them.
What is AEO?
AEO focuses on the answer, not the link. When someone asks a question, search engines increasingly respond with a direct answer: a featured snippet, a "People also ask" box, a knowledge panel, a voice response, or an AI-written summary. Being the source for that answer puts you in front of the person even if they never click.
AEO work includes:
- Writing the answer first: a clear, short, direct reply near the top of the page, followed by detail.
- Using question-style headings that mirror how people ask.
- Structuring lists, steps and comparisons so they are easy to lift.
- Adding structured data where it fits (see schema markup that helps a service business).
- Keeping facts accurate, dated and consistent across your pages.
Voice assistants and snippets made this idea familiar years ago. AI answers have made it matter more.
What is GEO?
GEO addresses generative AI: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. These systems read many sources and write a fresh answer. They sometimes cite their sources and sometimes simply name brands.
The aim is to be part of that answer. GEO work includes:
- Being present in the places AI systems draw from: your own site, reputable directories, review sites, industry publications, forums and encyclopaedic sources.
- Making your brand and its facts clear and consistent: who you are, what you do, where, for whom.
- Allowing the relevant crawlers: each AI vendor has its own, and a firewall or robots file can block them without anyone intending it.
- Publishing original, quotable material: data you collected, clear definitions, honest comparisons.
- Earning mentions from trusted third parties.
Nobody can promise a placement in an AI answer. These systems change, and their answers vary from one asking to the next. The work improves your chances and the quality of what is said about you.
How do they compare?
| | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages | Be the direct answer | Be cited or named in AI answers |
| Where it shows | Search results | Snippets, voice, answer boxes | AI chat and AI search summaries |
| Main lever | Technical health, content, links | Answer-first, structured content | Brand clarity, trusted mentions, access |
| How you measure | Rankings, clicks | Snippet wins, impressions | Mentions, citations, AI referrals |
In plain terms, SEO gets you found, AEO gets you picked, and GEO gets you named.
Where do they overlap?
Most of the effort. Google states in its Search Central guidance on AI features that there are no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond the fundamentals of Search: pages must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and the content should be helpful and reliable. The same habits serve all three:
- A site search engines can crawl and render.
- Fast, mobile-friendly pages.
- Content written for people, with clear answers.
- Accurate facts about the business, kept consistent.
- A reputation built through real reviews, mentions and links.
Treat the three terms as different views of the same job.
Which one should you do first?
Start with the base. If your site has indexing problems, slow pages or thin content, nothing else will help. A technical SEO audit finds those. Next, rewrite your most important pages to lead with the answer. Then work on your presence beyond your site: profiles, reviews, directories and partners.
A local service business may find the Google Business Profile does more for it than any new content. See local SEO for a Pune business. A software or B2B company may benefit most from clear definitions, comparisons and third-party coverage.
What are the trade-offs?
AEO can cost you clicks. If the answer sits on the results page, the reader may not visit. The gain is visibility and trust. The loss is traffic, so measure leads and enquiries, not only sessions.
GEO is hard to measure. Tools exist, but results shift. Check by asking real questions in each assistant now and then, and look for AI referrals in your analytics.
Chasing every new acronym can distract from basics. A site with solid fundamentals and honest content is already most of the way there.

Questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. Answer engines and AI assistants draw on the same web that search engines index. Pages that are crawlable, clear and trusted tend to do well in both. Think of AEO and GEO as extensions of good SEO, not replacements.
What does AEO stand for?
Answer Engine Optimisation. It means shaping your content so that search features, voice assistants and AI tools can pick it as the direct answer to a question.
What does GEO stand for?
Generative Engine Optimisation. It means improving the chance that generative AI systems, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, mention or cite your brand and pages in their written answers.
Do I need separate budgets for each?
Usually not. Most of the work is shared: technical health, clear content, structured data and a trustworthy reputation. Add specific tasks for answers and citations on top of that foundation.
