Local SEO for a Pune business
When someone nearby searches for what you do, a few businesses show up on the map. How a Pune business gets into that list, from Google Business Profile to honest reviews.
To show up in local searches in Pune, claim and complete your Google Business Profile, keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere, collect honest reviews and reply to them, and give your website clear pages about what you do and where. Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence, so each of those needs attention.
How does local search work?
When someone in Baner types "dentist near me" or "accountant in Kothrud," Google shows a map pack with three or so businesses, then regular results. The pack is driven by the Google Business Profile, not by your website alone.
Google's help pages say three factors decide local ranking:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches what was searched.
- Distance: how far your business is from the searcher or the location in the query.
- Prominence: how well known the business is, drawn from reviews, links, articles and mentions.
You cannot change distance. You can improve the other two.
Step 1: Is your Google Business Profile complete?
This is the highest-value task. Claim the profile at business.google.com and verify it. Then fill in everything:
- Business name: use the real name as it appears on your signage and documents. Adding keywords breaks the guidelines.
- Primary category: the most important choice. Pick the one that matches your main service, then add secondary ones.
- Address or service area: if customers visit you, show the address. If you travel to them, hide the address and list the areas you serve.
- Hours: include holidays and special hours.
- Phone and website: a local number, with the website landing page that best matches the profile.
- Services and products: list each, with a short plain description.
- Description: a clear paragraph on what you do and for whom, without stuffing.
- Photos: real photos of the premises, the team and the work. Add new ones regularly.
- Messaging and booking links, if you use them: a WhatsApp link is useful in India, where many people prefer to message.
Check the profile for duplicates and old listings from previous owners or addresses.
Step 2: Are your details consistent everywhere?
Your name, address and phone number, often shortened to NAP, should match across your site, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Inconsistencies confuse both people and search engines.
In India, relevant directories depend on your field. They may include Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART for suppliers, industry bodies and local chambers. Choose a few that your customers use and keep them accurate, instead of listing everywhere.
Write the address the way a courier would find it. Pune addresses often rely on landmarks, so include the building, the lane and the nearest well-known point if it helps customers.
Step 3: Do you have honest reviews?
Reviews influence prominence and persuade the reader. Ask every satisfied customer, at the moment they are happy, with a direct link to your review form. Reply to every review, kindly and specifically, including the negative ones. Do not offer rewards for good reviews or write your own. Google's policies prohibit fake and incentivised reviews, and both can lead to removal of reviews or the profile.
Customers in Pune may write in English, Marathi or Hindi. Reply in the same language where you can.
Step 4: Does your website say where you work?
Your site supports the profile. Make these clear:
- A contact page with the same NAP as your profile, an embedded map and directions.
- A home page that says what you do and in which city or area in the first lines.
- A page for each main service, with detail and examples.
- Pages for areas, such as Kothrud, Baner, Viman Nagar, Hinjewadi, Pimpri-Chinchwad or Koregaon Park, only if you really serve or operate there and have something specific to say. Thin pages that swap a place name are not worth the effort.
- Local structured data matching the page (see schema markup for a service business).
- Fast, mobile-friendly pages. Most local searches happen on phones.
Step 5: Do other local sources mention you?
Prominence grows with real-world presence. Sponsor a local event, join a business association, be quoted in local press, partner with neighbouring businesses and ask them to link to you. A genuine mention on a Pune business site counts for more than a purchased directory link.
How do you measure local results?
Use the Performance section of your Business Profile to see how many people found you by searching for your business or category, and how many called, asked for directions or visited the site. In Search Console, check queries that include Pune and your neighbourhoods. In Google Analytics, track calls, form submissions and WhatsApp clicks as events. The question to answer is how many real enquiries came from local search.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Using a virtual office or a friend's address to appear local. It violates the guidelines and can suspend the profile.
- Stuffing keywords into the business name.
- Letting reviews go unanswered.
- Ignoring Marathi and Hindi search habits if your customers use them.
- Leaving old phone numbers or closed branches live.
What are the trade-offs?
Local ranking depends on proximity, so a business just outside a neighbourhood may never win searches inside it. Work on the areas where you can be genuinely relevant, and use paid ads or partnerships for the rest.
Reviews take time and effort to earn, and one bad review will not undo a good record. Be steady.
If you do not serve customers locally, for example an online-only consultancy, local SEO matters less. Put the effort into content and authority instead.

Questions
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the work of appearing in search results and maps when people look for a business near them. It centres on your Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent business details across the web and a website that makes your location and services clear.
How does Google decide which local businesses to show?
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the searcher or the place named. Prominence is how well known you are, based on reviews, links and mentions.
Can I rank in Pune if my office is in another city?
It is hard. Google weighs physical proximity. If you serve Pune customers at their location, you can list a service area. If you do not have a real premises in Pune, do not fake an address, which breaks Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended.
Do I need pages for each Pune neighbourhood?
Only if you have a real presence or distinct service for each. Thin pages with swapped place names add little and can look spammy. A few useful pages for areas where you genuinely work are better.
